Senior Captains to Lead Squad of Talented Underclassmen

This spring, the St. Lawrence University women's crew team will be relying on a group of strong underclassmen to propel the team towards a successful season. The roster for the Saints includes 14 first years and 15 sophomores, who will provide dynamic strength this season as the Saints look for a repeat performance from last year.

St. Lawrence competed in three regattas during the fall and the team started off their spring season with the Clarkson Erg race, where they won in both the novice women and varsity women categories. The Saints took home Liberty League Champions for the Novice 8+ and Novice Crew of the Year last season, and will strive for the same outcomes.

"The team started spring training the last week in January, gradually building up our base, so that in February we could begin to introduce sprinting into our weekly training. So far the team has successfully made the transition to incorporate training on our new dynamic ergs, indoor tanks and the varsity weight room." said senior captain Mikayla Thomas.

"We are very much looking forward to our spring training trip down in Florida as well, so we are striving to make as many gains as possible in the next two weeks before we pack our bags and hop on a plane to Florida." said Thomas. "After we return from Florida we will be back on the St. Lawrence Seaway in Waddington, N.Y., in the mornings, preparing for our first races of the season down in Rochester."

"Winter training is going well! We are getting to that point where things are getting tough. We are waking up Monday, Wednesday, Friday, at 5:45, and have about eight practices a week." said senior captain Annalise Williams.

"Our Florida training trip is less than a week away, and we are certainly motivated by that. But more, we are motivated by each other. The harder things get, the more we rely on one another. We hold each other accountable, and expect the same in return, and that in combination with explicit support for one another, is what makes our winter training successful." said Williams. "As much as we are proud of what we are doing, we can't wait to get in boats. We work out more than other rowing teams because we get on the water later, and this makes us more excited for the beginning of our racing season."

The Saints head to Melbourne, Fla. for spring break to prep for their upcoming season, and will compete in their first race at St. John Fisher in Rochester, N.Y., on April 2nd
