Sophomore Lucy Hochschartner posted a team-best 27th place in the women's 5-kilometer classic to lead the St. Lawrence University Nordic Ski team on day one of the Saint Michael's College Carnival at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington, Vermont.
Hochschartner finished the course in 14 minutes and 27.06 seconds to earn 20 points for the Saints and seven individual NCAA points, bringing her season total to 21.
Dana Hatton recorded the next highest result for the Saints, earning 45th place and taking home 13 points for the Scarlet and Brown. Hatton completed the course in 14:57.52.
First-year Timothy Cunningham led the men's squad for the second weekend in a row, taking home the top spot for the men in 57th place. He completed the 10-kilometer course in 27:01.93 to earn 13 points for the Saints. Cunningham, Matthew Young and George Jarvinen combined for 36 pointd for the Saints.
"Tomorrow will be a challenging day for the women, but they are getting better for sure and will be hungry tomorrow," said head coach Ethan Townsend. "On the men's side, today was an okay day, they're getting better and showing progress. Waxing was difficult today, but not just for us, so no excuses."
At the end of day one, St. Lawrence earned 79 points good for ninth place for the women, 10th for the men, and 10th place overall. Dartmouth, the University of Vermont and Middlebury College took home the top three spots.
The Saints will return to Sleepy Hollow in Huntington, Vermont tomorrow for day two of the Saint Michael's College Carnival.
